Vénusz

Here the Hungarian lyrics of 'Venus'. I posted the recording as well; it's the third song on MyPlayer (just click on my photo). Of course it's hard to translate such lyrics, because written in Hungarian it's so more poetic. And because they're talking about 'her ravenblack hair', I guess the song is about/dedicated to Mariska.
With many thanks to Edwin van Schie (Hongaarse School, Haarlem).

They're still asking for Mariska

Today I was phoned by a woman from Bolivia, South-America. She was asking for Mariska, regarding a televison show. She told me that she got our phone number yesterday from Marga, the manager of 'Los Diablos', the band who recorded 'Venus' together with Mariska (see also on my Music Player). I remember our trip to Barcelona so well!!!
She was shocked to hear about Mariska's passing away, but I told her I understand. But can you imagine what it did to me?! After the phone call I looked at Mariska'… Continue

Shocking Blue 1969

With Thanks to Kyrill for the newspaper clipping I took this one from. I guess the photo was taken somewhere in The Hague. But am I right? At least we know for sure this image served as an illustration in an article about Venus and announcing the coming of their first album (At Home).

A Really Great Tribute to Mariska by Hot Rod Anglican! I love it! Hot Rod says: This is the Send Me A Postcard tribute song which I wrote and recorded for the 40th anniversary of that Shocking Blue song.

Only one week and it will be another year after the sad passing away of Mariska. A day, we believe, might best be remembered with sincerity and respect.

The Wheat

(Nederlands - hieronder)

From time to time I want to share things with you regarding Mariska, about what music she liked, etc.

'The Wheat' is taken from the soundtrack of the movie 'Gladiator' (2000). The first time we heard this theme was on Italian television, in the programme 'Affari Tuoi' (comparable with 'Deal or No Deal' with Beau van Erven Dorens in Holland). When the Italian host (conduttore) was talking to the man or woman in the studio, about whether to accept the deal or not,… Continue

Senza Fine

I was working on Mariska's biography, and I read the following lines from a song Mariska really loved. The song is called 'Senza Fine', originally by Gino Paoli. But the version I'm referring to is from the (horror) movie "Ghost Ship" (2002). A part of the lyrics that mean so much to me:

Non m'importa della luna
Non m'importa delle stelle
Tu per me sei luna e stelle
Tu per me sei sole e cielo
Tu per me sei tutto quanto
Tutto quanto io voglio avere
Senza fine...

De maan is voor mij niet belan… Continue

Good question. What I know that is isn't taken from any street in Budapest (that I know for sure). In those days it was Robbie (and maybe in some way the record company) who called the shots, so probably it was his idea to name the album "Attila"....
We can build even more crazy theories about the origin of album's name, but I think only Andre can make it clear for us. :-)
Joe replied to Joe's discussion 'Dream On Dreamer?'on Sunday
Attila can also refer to someone who is a tyrant or uses brute force. I have wondered why they chose that name as well.....maybe someone got mad at Robbie and called him Atilla?? and he decided to have the last laugh and name the album after that :)
I think it's definitely Klaasje coming first on this picture with his beaming smile.
Another interesting thing I've just found in Wikipedia in an article about Attila: "In Hungary, several public places are named after Attila; for instance, in Budapest there are 10 Attila Streets and an Attila Lane, one of which is an important st...
I think that was intentional. Maybe Robbie wanted to emphasize that from his point of view Shocking Blue has really started with Mariska and "Beat With Us" was just a No. 0 album.

Mariska truly was the summit of HIP in those days! She must have been an example for lots of girls who wanted to look like her! A style icon, as we say now. Wonderful.
forever in my mind carries the music to temporary Mariska & shoking blue (since that child will be heard on the radio of my Fathers) surely if

Mariska also disliked this album sleeve! I wonder if this was the record company's choice?!
